I feel the need to caveat this whole thing by reminding you that I’m Australian. Therefore my expectations when visiting the beach are very high; fine white sand, clear blue waters and swaying palm trees are the norm. Maybe it’s just that this wasn’t what I was expecting, but it didn’t really seem up to scratch.
My favourite temperature is when you practically can’t feel it. You know when you’re on the beach in the shade in your bathers and you’re neither hot and sweaty or wanting to put on more layers but just perfectly perfect? Dunk Island in September is like that. Lying on a sun lounge under a palm tree on the sand, contemplating the ocean while idly flipping through whatever book I’d specially put aside for this holiday, I was sure I’d died and arrived on a postcard.
Not every holiday has to involve jetting off somewhere exotic, sometimes the most relaxing and rewarding getaways can be found by car. Some of my favourite summer holidays have involved packing up the car, hitting the road and exploring the local area.
