Travelling can be an expensive beast, I have been known to send an SOS email home during the last week of a trip asking to “borrow” some money to get me through to the end. So whenever there is an opportunity do something free I am all about that!
“We’ll spend a few hours in the morning seeing the monuments”
Famous last words, seven hours later and fairly sure I had permanently injured my feet we staggered back to our hotel in Washington D.C. Turns out our map wasn’t to scale, I’m yet to let my friend forget it!
The snow crunched under foot and sat over a foot high on the picnic tables. When I had booked a tour out to the Grand Canyon I had never imagined that it would be snowing. Even though it was February I had assumed that Arizona was always a warmer climate. The snow was magical though still fresh enough that it wasn’t slushy but a fresh crisp white.
My ultimate insect phobia is moths, I can’t stand them. I get that it’s totally irrational, like what are they going to do to me? Flap me to death with their teeny tiny wings? It’s just they’re so black and silent and fly around your face. When I was kid I would get a bit hysterical around moths but I like to think these days my fear is at more manageable and socially acceptable level. And all because of a trip to Thailand.
I feel the need to caveat this whole thing by reminding you that I’m Australian. Therefore my expectations when visiting the beach are very high; fine white sand, clear blue waters and swaying palm trees are the norm. Maybe it’s just that this wasn’t what I was expecting, but it didn’t really seem up to scratch.
Being sick or injured whilst traveling is horrible for two reasons. Firstly, it ruins your plans, whether you were going to be lazing by the pool or rock climbing being sick takes the fun out of both those options. Secondly, you don’t have your usual support network that you do at home, your local doctor, your own bed, your mum are all far away.
In theory finding a travel companion should be easy but in practice it’s a rather tricky beast. If you don’t find someone who you are compatible to travel with it can ruin friendships and worse it can very easily ruin your holiday!
